Review of the points test discussion paper
The Government announced their intention to review the points test as part of their Migration Strategy.
A discussion paper reviewing the points test has now been released for consultation. The discussion paper outlines key challenges with the points test, suggest future reform directions and proposes key questions on which feedback is being sought. The Department of Home Affairs is inviting submissions to the review of the points test by 5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time on Friday 24th May 2024.
The points test applies to various visa categories including the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) or Skilled Work regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) visa.
The last major change to the points test was 2012.
The paper highlights that the points test should focus on characteristics that are associated with migrants successfully finding skilled work and should focus on targeting the skills Australia needs now and, in the future, as well better targeting young migration who will help address the challenges of an ageing population.
The discussion paper is available on the Department’s website at the following link Review of the points test (homeaffairs.gov.au)
