Permanent Closure of Subclass 189 Visa - New Zealand Stream Only

Effective July 1, 2023, the New Zealand stream of the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa has been permanently closed to new applications from primary applicants. As a result, it is no longer possible to submit a new application for a New Zealand stream visa. This change has been implemented to support the introduction of a new direct pathway to Australian citizenship for New Zealand citizens. Applications lodged prior to 1 July 2023 will continue to be processed.

Individuals with pending applications under the New Zealand stream and family members holding a Special Category visa (subclass 444) may consider withdrawing their application. Instead, they can opt to apply for Australian citizenship through the new direct pathway for New Zealand citizens.
