The new Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa
For many people it is frustrating and challenging to bring their parents to Australia to visit and spend quality time with the family. Due to the high demand for a visa to allow for parents to reunite with their children, the Australian Government has announced the introduction of the Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa.
The visa aims to facilitate greater contact between families and provides parents with a new pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia.
The visa allows parents to remain in Australia for up to five years at a time without departing. The parent may apply for a 3 year or 5 year visa. Parents are still eligible to apply for Visitor visas and/or permanent Parent visas.
Applications to sponsor parents for the subclass 870 visa will open from 17 April 2019 and applications for the visa are intended to open as of 1 July 2019. Once a sponsorship application has been approved, a sponsored parent will then be able to apply for the visa.
The Department has announced that up to 15,000 visas per year will be granted.
Other features of the new visa include:
No balance of Family test will be applied
‘No work’ conditions will be applied
Require health insurance
Must provide evidence of access to funds
