An attractive option for employers and skilled workers
Subclass 400 is a temporary visa best suited to skilled workers from overseas to undertake one of the following activities:
- Short-term highly specialised, non-ongoing work
- In limited circumstances, participate in an activity or work relating to Australia’s interests.
The “Highly Specialised Work Stream” is more commonly used where the applicant intends to do highly specialised work which requires skills, knowledge and experience that are not readily available in Australia. The applicant must have personal attributes and/or relevant work experience for the proposed activity that can assist Australian business. For instance, such work may require highly skilled and trained technicians in a particular field for a plant’s start-up and maintenance in Australia. Also, the work must not be ongoing in nature which means that the proposed work should be completed within 3 months. A stay of up to 6 months may be considered by DIBP under limited circumstances if supported by a strong business case.
A 400 visa is undoubtedly an attractive option for employers who want to employ overseas workers for short term specialist projects as the process does not require any sponsorship or nomination to apply for the visa. The current average processing times for the visa are 9 to 16 days only.
